Design Element: Shape (page 2)

Shapes can seem to take on a personality. In this case, the circles weigh down the curve due to the heaviness of the line. Upside down, this shape almost represents a happy face. As you see it here, the base holds up what may be a tree or a pole of some sort. The idea is that shapes can be simple and yet draw interest from the user. The combination of arcs, circles, a line, and a rectangle make it seem as though there is more content to the shape.

lines/shapes, similar to a tree

This shape conveys an entirely different personality. Bold, thick lines convey strength. When combined with angular representation and whitespace, the lines take on a geometric form. The base is not as heavy as the top, the bottom set of lines are set at a springy angle. If the bottom half of the shape replicates the top half, the concept communicates a solid, columnar object. When the bottom creates more of a springy than solid support, the top rests rather than cements in place.

This shape can transition to a layout with buttons in the angled rectangles and possibly sub buttons in the circles. Mousing over the angles may allow the circles and their supporting line to appear. The shape itself, reminiscent of a pole lamp, offers the potential for simple navigation with a shape different from typical left-side menus. Color thematically links the rectangles to the circles. Graphics can team with text in the rectangles to keep the background clean and simple. Most of all, it's a bit different and leaves substantial room for content.
